I was interviewed by Dominic Bosher, Associate Director at La Fosse, a technology, digital and change recruitment firm, about relocating from London to Newcastle in 2018. It came at a point when remote working had many more people considering a move out of the capital.
We spoke about getting back in sync with the North East’s working life after 20 years away, including volunteering for Dynamo. We weighed the trade-offs of leaving London: more space and a less frenetic pace against a much smaller market for your skills. I raised my concern about the regional talent pipeline, with only a handful of technology leaders developing the next generation compared with hundreds in London. I closed with advice for London-based managers hiring remotely, where the open question is how leaders develop people they rarely see in person.
Thinking of leaving London? We spoke to tech leader Andrew Besford about his experience, La Fosse, 7 January 2021
