This episode of the Government Transformed podcast was recorded in Leeds to coincide with a reunion of the Digital Academy, which the podcast highlighted as one of the UK government’s most innovative digital projects, and which I was closely involved with from the outset.
The academy’s aim was to equip civil servants with the skills to build public services comparable to the digital services citizens had come to expect. Initially established in the Department for Work and Pensions, it later transferred to the Government Digital Service and closed in 2022.

A summary article by Global Government Forum reflects on the academy as an example of the difference small, focused teams can make to public services when given time and freedom to address core problems.
