Automation in Healthcare – Driving better patient outcomes

I introduced the Automation in Healthcare event on 8 October 2020, marking the launch of the North East health tech cluster. I spoke as a non-executive director of Northumbria Healthcare and a board member of Dynamo, welcoming attendees and setting out what the cluster is for.

The cluster was established in partnership between Dynamo North East, a not-for-profit organisation focused on growing the North East of England’s technology economy, and CGI, a global IT and consulting services firm. It brings together industry experts to connect and collaborate on unmet healthcare needs through technology, and this first showcase was aimed at regional SMEs working in health tech and automation.

Early discussions within the cluster identified process automation as a priority, leading to this event. The session explored how automation can improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency, in the middle of a pandemic that made freeing NHS staff from administrative tasks more pressing than ever. CGI set out the business case for automation in healthcare, and five use cases followed, with examples from NHS bodies and private healthcare organisations in the North East and nationally:

  • CGI in healthcare
  • Blue Prism, with Connect Health
  • UiPath, with NHS England and NHS Improvement
  • Automation Anywhere, with The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • CloudTrade
